The Biggest Mistake Massage Therapists Make When Setting Their Rates

One of the biggest mistakes massage therapists make when setting their rates is choosing a number based on what feels least uncomfortable instead of what actually makes sense.

Sometimes we look at what other therapists are charging and pick something similar. Sometimes we choose a rate that feels “reasonable” or safe to us. And sometimes we price based on fear. Fear of charging too much, losing clients, or being judged.

I get it. Pricing can bring up a lot.

But the problem is that when you set your rates this way, you can end up with a business that only works if you overwork.

A lot of massage therapists were taught how to be great therapists, but not necessarily how to build a business that supports their life, body, and financial needs. So instead of doing the math, we compare ourselves to others.

The trouble is, your rates need to account for more than the treatment itself.

They also need to reflect things like rent, supplies, laundry, software, continuing education, taxes, admin time, vacation time, sick days, and the physical demand of hands-on work. If your pricing only works when you never take time off or never slow down, it may not actually be sustainable.

I think many therapists undercharge because they care deeply. They want to be accessible. They want to help. They don’t want people to feel priced out. Unfortunately, when your rates are too low, you usually make up for it by seeing more people, working longer hours, and ignoring your own limits.

That affects your energy, your body, and often the quality of care you can give.

Just because another therapist charges a certain amount doesn’t mean that number makes sense for you and your business. You don’t know their expenses, their capacity, or whether their business is actually working well behind the scenes.

A better place to start is by asking:

  • How much do I need to take home each month?

  • What are my monthly business expenses?

  • How many treatments can I sustainably do in a week?

  • What rate supports both my clients and my life?

Because your rates are not just about money. They are also about boundaries, sustainability, and the kind of practice you want to build.

Your bills matter.
Your body matters.
Your time off matters.

A rate that only works when you ignore yourself is not really working.

overwhelm

If figuring out your rates feels a little overwhelming, here is a fillable spreadsheet to help you work through the numbers. It’s designed to help you look at what you need to take home, what your business needs, and what your pricing might need to be to support a more sustainable practice. You can plug in different numbers, explore your options, and see what comes up.
